Krypton Physisorption for Characterization of Nanoscopic Microporous Thin Films

Volumetric physisorption analysis is typically conducted using sample amounts of the order of milligrams to a few grams. For smaller sample quantities and for extremely low surface area samples, the number of non-adsorbed gas molecules at adsorption equilibrium can exceed the amount of molecules adsorbed on the sample, which will hamper the accurate measurement of gas uptake by the sample. Temperature Gradient Analysis for Determining Melting Point of Proteins Using the NanoPlus

The NanoPlus includes a temperature gradient feature for size and zeta potential.  This unique feature allows the researcher to further utilize the built-in Peltier Thermo-electric controller for temperature studies.  The sample cell in the NanoPlus can be held at a specific temperature between 5°C to 90°C or a gradient of increasing or decreasing temperatures in 0.1°C increments or greater.  This is ideal for determining the melting point, or denaturing point, of proteins using the NanoPlus. Adding a custom model to the NLDFT library – a CO2 GCMC model for carbons

New models for determining the pore volume and pore size distribution of porous solids may be easily added to MicroActive.  These kernels developed using NLDFT, GCMC and other variants have been available for more than 20 years.  Traditionally instrument manufacturers have supplied these proprietary models.  To introduce new powerful capabilities for users, Micromeritics has developed a simple program to convert model isotherms (a kernel) to a model file that can be easily used with MicroActive.  This provides users the full capabilities of the MicroActive user interface and advanced deconvolution techniques. New capabilities for the 3Flex – simultaneous analysis of three samples each using a different adsorptive

The Micromeritics 3Flex design includes metal seals, hard seal valves, and both a Pirani and cold cathode vacuum gauges.  The hardware is complemented by the state of the art software which continuously monitors  the status of the instrument.  These hardware and software feautures allow 3Flex users to perform adsorption experiments that were previously unavailable in multi-port instruments.  3Flex users may characterize three samples simultaneously and each sample may use a different adsorptive.   Continue reading

The Utility of Specific Surface Area Measurement for Pharmaceutical Materials

In the pharmaceutical world, particle size analysis has traditionally been the method of choice to “characterize” raw materials.  Beginning with sieve analyses all the way to more current technologies like laser light scattering, this physical characterization measurement has been used to set incoming raw material specifications, help determine which excipients will be used in a formulation, and troubleshoot product performance issues such as dissolution.  While particle size analysis is, without a doubt, an important piece of the puzzle, it is exactly that – a piece.  Other measurements can provide essential and useful information as well and, when paired with other techniques, assist the pharmaceutical scientist to more fully characterize their Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and excipient materials.  Among these techniques is the measurement of surface area.
